Service Records

The data currently available of this site was extracted from a much larger data set originally developed and maintained by the Canadian Great War Project  for soldier “from”  Victoria BC.  Asking the question “Where is a soldier “from” is more complex that it would appear.  In the early days of the war, many soldiers traveled to Valcartier before the signed the attestation papers.  Later, many from smaller communities would travel to Victoria before signing up simply because suitable entry points or medical inspections were not available closer to home.  For others, Victoria may have been a transit point where they stayed for only a few days or weeks.  Others who were born in Victoria and had lived there for many years may have signed up in other locations.  For our purposes we have extracted all records where either the place of attestation, place of birth or place of residence was recorded as Victoria.

Users of this site may now directly access the new search engine of the Canadian Great War Project by clicking on the link below.  By entering search parameters “Victoria” as the location enlisted you will find a listing of almost 8500 soldiers.  On the other hand if you specify Victoria as place of birth you will find only about 550 records.

Users should be aware that although currently the best source of data much work remains before all records are fully indexed.  Some regiments such as PPCLI are virtually complete, while others remain work in progress.
