Service Records

The data currently available of this site was extracted from a much larger data set maintained by the Canadian Great War Project  for soldier “from”  Victoria BC.  Asking the question “Where is a soldier “from” is more complex that it would appear.  In the early days of the war, many soldiers traveled to Valcartier before the signed the attestation papers.  Later, many from smaller communities would travel to Victoria before signing up simply because suitable entry points or medical inspections were not available closer to home.  For others, Victoria may have been a transit point where they stayed for only a few days or weeks.  Others who were born in Victoria and had lived there for many years may have signed up in other locations.  For our purposes we have extracted all records where either the place of attestation, place of birth or place of residence was recorded as Victoria.
