Jan 6 – PPCLI became the first Canadian unit in action Jan 6 – Provincial Normal School opened for its first term
14 Jan – The 1st Canadian Division lands in France Feb 14 – Thousands gather to see volunteers of the 30th Battalion leave for the front.

Feb 26 – Nellie McClung petitioned the Alberta legislature to demand voting rights for women. Women voted in municipal elections 2 months later. Mar 26 – The Vancouver Millionaires, defeated the Ottawa Senators to win the Stanley Cup.
Apr 22 to May 25 – Second Battle of Ypres – the Canadian troops hold the line against German attack with chlorine gas.
May 3 – John McCrae wrote the famous poem In Flanders Fields at Ypres.  Published in Dec1915 in Punch magazine. May 8 – Anti-German riot at Kaiserhof Hotel at the corner of Blanshard and Johnson Street. Read more about Germans in Victoria here
May 7 – Lusitania sunk with the loss of 1,256 lives May 25 – HMS Kent arrived in Victoria for refit from damage in battle off the Falkland Islands
June 6 – 2nd CMR leaves for the front.
Dec 19 – Capt M.M. Bell-Irving, became the first Canadian pilot to shoot down a German aircraft. Dec 15 – Sir Richard McBride resigns as Premier. He is succeeded by Hon. W.J. Bowser
