  Jan 27 –  Breakwater for Victoria harbour completed. Read this article from the Victoria Daily Times about the breakwater. Feb 3 – Margaret Haney, the first of four merchant ships launched in Victoria. Feb 9 – 143rd Battalion departed for the front
Mar 11– Russian Revolution Mar 15 – The Russian Revolution – Czar Nicholas abdicated  
Mar 17 – Canada issued a $1 note to mark the birthday of Princess Patricia
Apr 6 – United States declared war on Germany Apr 5 – Women (except Asians and aboriginals) won the right to vote and hold public office.
Apr 9 – Battle of Vimy Ridge – the Canadian Corps of four divisions captured a key German position near Arras.
Apr 12 – Women’s vote in Ontario
July 25 – Finance Minister Sir Thomas White introduced The Income War Tax Act as a war time measure
May 18 – Borden announced decision to implement conscription
June 2 – Billy Bishop awarded the Victoria Cross June 9 – Helen MacGill was appointed the first woman judge in BC
June 7 – First women elected to Provincial Legislature in Alberta June 9 – Sir Arthur Currie of Victoria  promoted Lieutenant General and appointed to Command the Canadian Corps

July 17 – the Royal family changed their name to the “House of Windsor”
Aug 15 – Battle of Hill 70 – First major action by the Canadian Corps under Canadian Command Aug 6 – Sir Richard McBride former BC premier died in London
Aug 29 – Military Service Act passed implementing conscription.
Sept 20 – Wartime Elections Act extends right to vote to women in the armed forces and female relatives of men in uniform.
Oct 17 – Borden announces the formation of a Union government
Oct 26 – Battle of Passchendaele
Nov 2 – Balfour declaration that Britain supported the establishment of a permanent home for Jews in Palestine  
Nov 6 – The October Revolution culminated in the capture of the Winter Palace in Petrograd by Trotsky, Nov 20 – The Governor General, The Duke of Devonshire arrived in Victoria for a five day visit.
Nov 26 – National Hockey League formed
Dec 6 – The Halifax Explosion –killed more than 1600
Dec 17 – Union government under Borden won 153 seats to 82 for the Liberals in a general election
